Sidmouth, United Kingdom

As a gift from Amy’s siblings and partners we had a two-night stay at a fancy hotel down in Sidmouth, Devon. We drove down on Sunday morning just in time for a delicious roast at The Anchor Inn in the town centre.

After lunch we had a ramble through town and down the beach of Sidmouth. rremBefore heading to the Sidmouth Harbour Hotel to check in, the room was really nice.

As the weather was pretty overcast and it was now late afternoon we decided just to head on down to the spa for a sauna and dip in the pool and jacuzzi.

We popped out of the hotel at sunset to head to Jacob’s Ladder, the ladder takes you down onto a pebbly beach – not that we bothered as it was very chilly! norThe sunset was a beautiful pink colour and a nice way to end our first day. rremWe walked back towards town and grabbed dinner at a nice little pub. Here you can see Sidmouth on the waterfront. norThe following morning we headed down for breakfast in the hotel restaurant, it was delicious.

Unfortunately the weather was very overcast with some light drizzle. We decided we’d continue with our plans and make our way up the coast to High Peak.

A look back down the hill towards Sidmouth town centre. rremThe walk was approximately 3km each way, but there were good views of the Jurassic coastline and across the Mutters Moor. rremrrem The trail was well marked and we passed some brightly coloured bushes on the way.

There were even holly bushes, just in time for Christmas. norWe reached a small bench that had a good view of the coastline heading back towards Sidmouth, you can see just how foggy it was.

The final part was a little steeper but not much of a struggle.

The views were much the same as we’d seen along the trail, but we did get a glimpse of Ladram Bay, which we decided to visit the following day. rrem It was then the walk back to Sidmouth as the drizzle was getting a little harder.

For lunch we headed half an hour down the road to Exmouth, we stopped in a little café for a coffee and hot food.

As the weather was still very overcast, we went bowling!

Amy somehow won! rremWe also played pool and some arcade games, luckily, I won at both of those!

Exmouth has a nice beach which curves around the bay so we had a walk back along the beach. IMG_20181015_142832I can imagine it’s popular in the summer as it’s so close to the town centre. rremHeading back to the car we wandered through the Exmouth harbour, where there were lots of these brightly coloured new builds – a lot nicer than the ones you normally see, that’s for sure. rrem Included with our hotel cost was dinner for one evening, it was pretty good food.

Our final morning we filled up on breakfast again, I had another full English whilst Amy had smashed avocado, poached egg and bacon. norThe weather wasn’t amazing, but we had a walk along the beach to the red cliffs of the coastline. rrem Here’s Jacob’s Ladder from the beach, it looks a little rusty from down here! With the cute beach huts that run along the front.

As I mentioned, we wanted to check out Ladram Bay, the bay has been carved out by the sea over thousands of years and has left these big rock formations. rremThere were quite a few around this area, some a lot thinner than others. It does make you wonder how long they’ll survive before collapsing. rrem From above you could get a better view of the rock formations, this is a panorama from along the coast. IMG_20181016_120128 The water would force its way through the rock to create caves and over time the roofs would collapse leaving these standing sea stacks. It’s the same as those we saw in Australia at the Twelve Apostles.

As the time was getting on, we decided to head back towards home, stopping off in Lyme Regis for some fish and chips! rremAfter a walk along the beachfront, we made our way to Julie’s house for dinner before heading back home. rrem It was a really nice few days away and a beautiful part of the UK.
